The Hurricanes varsity track and field team kicked off their season at home against Lutheran West and Fairview.
The girls team was lead by leading scorer, Jaden Walz, who picked up right where she left off from her successful freshman season by taking 1st place in long jump by over 2 feet. Jaden also placed 3rd in the 100M dash and scored a total of 15 points. The 4 x 200M relay team also took home a first place finish. The team of Bri Hannum, Julia Walz, Miklya Moore and Jaden Walz, started with the lead and never looked back on their way to an impressive win. After her three year hiatus from hurdles, senior Isabel Pena placed 4th in both the 100M and 300M hurdles. Isabel placed in all three of her events and scored a total of 5 points for the Lady Canes. Mikyla Moore placed 4th in the 200M dash to go along with her win in the 4 x 200M. The girls 4 x 100M team, including Isabel Pena, Abby Kestranek, Bri Hannum, and Jaden Walz, had a strong performance that earned them a 2nd place finish. Alyssa Helmick battled some strong throwers and fought her way to a 4th place finish in shot put. Melina Fernandez helped the Brooklyn girls add to their total by placing 4th in long jump.
The first race of the day for the boys was the 4 x 800M relay. The team of Jeffrey Rosin, Jacob Pena, Omar Rahmy and Alex Hilcu earned a 2nd place finish to start the season. In their first track meet ever, Joey Sullivan and Kemp Khay started their careers by earning 2 points each. Kemp ran a great 110M hurdles and finished in 3rd place. Joey scored a point in both, a race and a field event, by finishing 4th in both the 100M dash and high jump, by clearing over 5 feet.
