On Saturday, April 27, the Brooklyn Hurricanes Middle School Track and Field team competed against seven other schools in the Falcon Invitational. Even though we were one of the smaller schools in attendance, the Hurricanes held their own.
Jenna Young started the girls team off with a jump of 5’3” and a 1st place finish to secure herself a chance to compete in the Middle School State Championship in a few weeks. Jenna followed that up with a run of 13.4 to place 2nd in the 100m dash. Lexie Childers ran a PR 1:15.15 in the 400m dash to earn her team points and a 7th place finish. The girls 4×200 team (Melaine Fernandez, Lexie Childers, Amber Rice, Jenna Young) finished in 4th place. Lexie Childers (5th) and Rebecca Fagiani (8th) both earned their team points in the long jump. The girls team finished in 6th place with 30 points.
The boys team wanted to let everyone know Brooklyn was there…and that’s what they did. The boys scoring was started off with a PR run of 19.12 in the 110m hurdles by Chavon Holton, to earn himself a 3rd place finish against tough competition. Ray Cogburn continued the scoring for the Canes with a 3rd place for himself in the 100m dash. The boys 4×100 and 4x200m relay team (Ray Cogburn, Anthony Starr, Calvin Gore, Massiah Baker) had an exceptional day with a 2nd place finish in the 4×100 and a 1st place finish in the 4×200, shaving off over four seconds to run a personal best 1:45.06. Massiah Baker rounded out his great day and earned himself one last medal with a 3rd place finish in the 200m dash. We earned a couple more points in the field events with Oscar Davis finishing 6th in high jump, Anthony Starr taking 8th in the discus and Calvin Gore finishing 6th in the shot put. The Brooklyn boys team finished in 5th place with 43 points.
Overall, it was a great day by all that competed. Job well done!
